On the Third Day He Rose from the Dead.

“If Christ has not been raised our faith is in vain,” writes Paul the Apostle in his First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 15:14). Rightly so, we proclaim today with joy: He is risen! The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith, the source of life and hope for all humanity (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 638). In a world overshadowed by conflict, fear, and uncertainty, this truth shines like the first light of dawn after a long night.

The Resurrection of Jesus reminds us that darkness, suffering, and even death do not have the final word (cf. 1 Cor 15:55). The empty tomb stands as a powerful sign: life is stronger than death, hope is stronger than despair. The Apostles, once timid (cf. Mt 26:56, 69–75; Jn 20:19) and self-centered (cf. Mt 20:20–24; Lk 9:46), were transformed by the encounter with the risen Christ. They proclaimed boldly, even to the point of laying down their lives, that Jesus lives (cf. Acts 2:14–36; 4:13, 29–31; 5:41–42; 7:51–60; 28:30–31). If they could find courage amid fear, can we not also experience Jesus’ presence today?

This Easter, the world watches as wars rage in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and lives are lost. In our own state of West Bengal, the SIR has created fear, anxiety, and much harassment. In situations such as these, someone may question: If God exists, why does He allow all this suffering? The Resurrection answers: God’s power is most visible when human hope seems lowest (cf. Mt 8:25, 14:27). Just as the stone was rolled away from the tomb, God can open new paths even in moments of devastation and hopeless situations. He stands with those who suffer, the mourners, the displaced, and the forgotten, assuring them that their tears are not unseen.

Easter calls each of us to be witnesses of hope. Forgiveness in the face of offense, generosity in place of selfishness, compassion over indifference – these small acts illuminate the world with the light of the Resurrection. Families, communities, and workplaces become living signs that love is stronger than hatred and life stronger than death.

The Risen Christ greets us still: “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid” (Jn 20:19; Mt 28:10). In this greeting, we find courage to face uncertainty, healing for wounded hearts, and a mission to bring light where there is darkness. Even in moments of conflict and despair, Easter proclaims that hope is alive, that God continues to bring life to a weary world, and that love endures beyond all suffering.

As Pope Leo XIV reminds us, we are called to examine our hearts (Discourse to the Participants in the 36th Course on the Internal Forum [13/03/2026]), to embrace humility, and to allow God’s mercy to guide our choices. In a time when violence tempts us to fear and doubt tempts us to despair, Easter invites us to stand firm in faith, hope, and love.

May the joy of the triumph of Jesus Christ over death fill our hearts with the courage to witness the Risen Christ in every place and situation. May it inspire us to bring peace where there is strife, light where there is darkness, and hope where there is despair. For Christ is risen; yes, He is truly risen, and in Him, life, love, and hope will always triumph.

Alleluia! He is risen!

 

Saint Mother Teresa’s 115th Birth Anniversary Commemorated at Mother House and Archbishop House Calcutta

 Kolkata, August 26, 2025: The 115th birth anniversary of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta was observed with solemnity and devotion at the Mother House Chapel on AJC Bose Road, Kolkata. A Holy Mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of Calcutta and Coadjutor Bishop Elias Frank.

 The liturgical celebration was followed by a prayer service at the Tomb of Saint Mother Teresa, where clergy and faithful offered their heartfelt tributes. The occasion also coincided with the 75th birthday of Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, who was felicitated with a cake by the Missionaries of Charity sisters and the gathered faithful.

 

Later in the day, both prelates participated in a garlanding ceremony in honour of Saint Teresa at the Archbishop’s House, attended by staff and visitors. The event featured prayers and hymns, accompanied on the accordion by Chancellor Fr. Dominic Gomes, before the bronze statue of the Saint of the Poor. The nearby statue of Saint John Paul II was also respectfully garlanded, underscoring the reverence of the occasion.

Saint Mother Teresa’s life and work continue to inspire countless people across India and the world, reflecting her enduring legacy of service to the poor and vulnerable. Her example of compassion and dedication remains a guiding light for communities everywhere.

Calcutta Archdiocese Welcomes Coadjutor Archbishop Elias Frank

Kolkata, August 24, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Calcutta welcomed its new Coadjutor, Archbishop Elias Frank, while also marking the second anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination with a Pontifical High Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Murgihatta, on Sunday morning.

The solemn celebration, which began in the morning, was led by Archbishop Elias as the principal celebrant. He was joined at the altar by Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of Calcutta and 20 priests, including Deans, Provincials, and other senior clergy. The liturgy drew a large congregation of clergy, religious, and laity, though attendance was limited mainly to parishioners of the Cathedral, which now serves as the titular See of Archbishop Elias until his succession as Archbishop of Calcutta. To ensure wider participation, the Mass was live streamed across the Archdiocese, enabling the faithful to share in the historic occasion.

A highlight of the ceremony came when Archbishop Thomas D’Souza felicitated the new Coadjutor with an uthorio and bouquet, after which representatives of the religious and laity extended their greetings. Among them was a young girl, whose offering was warmly acknowledged by Archbishop Elias with a cheerful “high five”, drawing smiles across the congregation.

The congregation also witnessed a symbolic moment when the Letter of Appointment from Pope Leo was read aloud in English by the Chancellor, Fr. Dominic Gomes. The original Latin manuscript was then presented for all to see, underscoring the solemnity of the papal mandate.

Following the liturgical celebration, parishioners were invited to share in light refreshments. This offered a more informal moment for the faithful to personally greet and congratulate Archbishop Elias, strengthening the bond between the shepherd and his flock.

The celebration marked not only a milestone in Archbishop Elias’s own journey but also a significant moment in the life of the Archdiocese. As Coadjutor, he now prepares to eventually assume full responsibility as Archbishop of Calcutta, a role in which he will guide the faithful of one of India’s most historic Catholic sees.

The day’s events reflected both reverence for tradition and a sense of joyful community, as the Archdiocese looked forward to a new chapter in its pastoral leadership.

COADJUCTOR BISHOP ELIAS FRANK ASSUMES OFFICE IN CALCUTTA ARCHDIOCESE

 Kolkata, August 20, 2025: Bishop Elias Frank, the Coadjutor Bishop of the Archdiocese of Calcutta, took possession of office at Archbishop House today in a short ceremony held at the Archbishop’s Library.

After introductions and a prayer by Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, the Coadjutor presented his Appointment Letter – attached with the Seal of the Fisherman – received from Pope Leo XIV, to the Archbishop in the presence of the Archdiocesan College of Consultors. Each member of the College inspected the document as it was passed between them.

Bishop Elias will also serve as the new Vicar General of the archdiocese with immediate effect, succeeding V. Revd. Dominic Gomes, who has held the post since 2012.

With the presentation and acceptance of the credentials, Bishop Elias immediately ceased to hold the See of the Bishop of Asansol. He will now serve as the Apostolic Administrator of that diocese until a new bishop is appointed.

Fr. Mervyn Carapiet Memorial Lecture Highlights Vision Beyond Academic Excellence

 

Kolkata, August 18, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Calcutta hosted the 2025 Father Mervyn Carapiet Memorial Lecture at the Church of Christ the King, Park Circus on August 17. This year’s distinguished speaker, Dr. Dominic Savio SJ, Principal of St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata, addressed the theme “Reimagining Education in the 21st Century: A Paradigm Shift Towards Inclusiveness and Transformation.”

Fr. Savio described education as “the cornerstone of progress, the catalyst for both individual and collective transformation.” He emphasised the importance of students feeling valued and empowered throughout their educational journey. At the same time, he acknowledged that many remain deprived of quality education due to lack of opportunities. “We need to correct such anomalies so that everyone can get a chance to educate themselves for a better tomorrow,” he urged.

While calling for broader access, Fr. Savio stressed that education must remain sensitive to cultural diversity so that it is meaningful and purposeful. He also highlighted the growing challenge of student mental health, calling it a chronic concern in today’s highly competitive world.

During the interactive session, Fr. Savio responded to a question by reflecting on the mission of Catholic institutions. He noted that while academic excellence is desirable, the true goal should be to provide “something more than academic excellence, which others cannot offer; otherwise, we are working for naught.”

Adding her perspective, Sr. Marisa Robert, the respected foundress of Marian Education Centre, contributed valuable insights to the discussion.

The lecture drew an engaged audience, including veteran filmmaker Firdausal Hassan, Kolkata Press Club president Snehashish Sur, school principals, teachers, clergy, nuns, and distinguished alumni from Catholic institutions across the city. Attendees listened attentively as Fr. Savio outlined his vision for inclusive and transformative education.

In a symbolic gesture of honour, Vicar General Fr. Dominic Gomes crowned Fr. Savio with a golden laurel diadem, recognising the wisdom and scholarship he shared. The event concluded with closing prayers led by the Vicar General, followed by light refreshments.

 

 

 

Celebrating 1700 years of the Nicene Creed at Bishop's College

On Saturday 02 August 2025, Bishop’s College Kolkata, under the auspices of its principal Rev. Dr Sunil Caleb and his team, bettingly hosted the historic event of 1700th Anniversary of the Nicene Creed which was promulgated by Emperor Constantine in collaboration with bishops (from far and near) in Nicaea (now İznik, Republic of Türkiye) in 325 AD.
The historic convention was very aptly described by Bishop Paritosh Canning (Bishop of Calcutta, CNI and President-Bengal Christian Association). He wrote: “I am particularly moved to see the spirit of ‘Ut Unum Sint’ (that they may be one) embodied in the joint efforts of the Theological Colleges of Bengal – Bishop’s College, Morning Star Regional Seminary, Barrackpore, Serampore College, Calcutta Bible Seminary and Buntain celebration.
This collaborative endeavour, under the patronage of the Roman Catholic Bishops, CNI Bishops, and Orthodox Churches of Bengal, is a powerful testament to our shared faith and our commitment to Ecumenical Unity. As we gather as “Pilgrims of Hope,” let us seize this
opportunity to reflect on the Creed’s historical significance, reaffirm its doctrinal importance and explore its ongoing relevance for Christian Life and Ministry.”

After a brief introduction by Rev Sunil Caleb, Brahmabandhab Upadhyay’s (1861-1907) Sanskrit composition Vande Vande Sachidanandam Vande Sachidanandam, Vande
Vande meaning Worship, worship (the One who is) Being, Knowledge, Bliss…
The Supreme, Ancient, Higher than the high… (Who is) Fullness, Wholeness, Beyond… Worship, worship, worship) was  sung by Bishop’s College choir.
All then stood up and recited the Nicene Creed. Thereafter, a colourful souvenir on the historic event was released by Thomas D’Souza, Archbishop of Calcutta.
The Nicene Creed, is the only ecumenical creed on Christian statement of faith because it is accepted as authoritative by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and major Protestant churches.
Rev. Dr. George Panthanmackel, MSFS of Morning Star College, Barrackpore (holder of three doctorates) gave the keynote address. At the outset he clarified that the Nicene Conference in 325 AD was necessitated owing to the Arian Heresy. Arius, a priest from Alexandria,
challenged the traditional belief in the divinity of Christ, arguing that Jesus was a created being, and can’t be equal to God the Father.
To stamp out Arianism for good, and to establish that Jesus was Fully God yet Fully Human,   the Conference of Nicaea and emphasised on the inclusion of `consubstantial’ (literally, “of the same substance”).

Rev. George clarified that the Nicene Creed we recite today isn’t the same which was adopted in Nicaea in 325 AD. Some additions were made in subsequent conferences. For example, 381 AD Council of Constantinople further clarified the Nicene Creed, particularly regarding the Holy Spirit as: “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from
the Father, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets.” This addition was crucial in establishing the doctrine of the Trinity, emphasizing that the Holy Spirit is also divine and equal to the Father and the Son.
During Question-Answer session on Rev. George’s keynote address, one participant said that the Nicene Creed which was written 1700 years ago, needs to be revised in keeping with times, to be more inclusive. Rev. George replied that for this another Council needs to be
held.
Ms Christine Nathan, President of International Catholic Migrants’ Commission (ICMC) was the next speaker. Her topic was the `Impact of Nicene Creed on the life of Christians.’ She has a vast experience of having worked with International Labour Organisation (ILO), several
NGOs and Civil Societies. She is also a noted trade unionist from Mumbai. Salient features of Ms Nathan’s dissertation are given below:
“Why do we need the Nicene Creed instead of the Word?
(She answered the Creed is an authoritative and incontrovertible church document).The Nicene Creed helps in cementing the faith in one God and His justice among migrants and refugees. She mentioned late Pope Francis was very supportive of migrants/refugees and this helped ICMC rehabilitate 500,000 refugees from Syria and other countries in the
USA.
After Ms Nathan, Rev. Dr Zadingluaia Chinzah of Serampore College spoke on the History of the Council of  Nicaea and the Nicene Creed. Key points of his talk were:
Arius, a highly-respected priest from Alexandria argued that Jesus was a created being, inferior to God the Father and not of the same substance (consubstantial) as Him.
After intense debate, the Council affirmed the divinity of Jesus Christ, declaring Him to be “co-eternal” and “consubstantial” with the Father. This statement of faith has shaped Christian doctrine for centuries.
The Council of Nicaea marked a turning point in Christian history, demonstrating the Church’s ability to unite on core doctrines. Today, the Nicene Creed remains a
fundamental statement of faith, recited in churches around the world.
Rev. Dr Swarup Bar (Professor of Christian Theology, Bishop’s College) spoke on the doctrinal and theological dimensions of Nicene Creed as follows:
Nicene Creed is actually Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed (the more accurate term). It’s for continuity and unchangeability.
The Creed was developed by Emperor Constantine in a very political context.
Despite this limitation, there are many theological and doctrinal elements that continue to be relevant to the Christian faith today. The Creed has stood the test of time
for 1700 years. To embody the `Trinitarian’ framework of the Creed,
Greek terminologies were used as they were considered most appropriate.
There was only one line on the Holy Spirit in 325 AD Nicene Creed: “I believe in the Holy Spirit”. This contrasts with the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381 AD, which expanded on the Holy Spirit’s role and nature. Divinity of the Son Jesus is very important because
otherwise the Salvation History doesn’t hold good. Nicene Creed establishes that Jesus’ Resurrection has indeed happened.
The feminist perspectives of the Nicene Creed are:
Jesus became Human, not man. We only highlight the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus but
not his birth. The Nicene Creed does. Chhotebhai speaks on Nicene Creed from Laity’s Point of view at Bishop’s College Chhotebhai (a towering lay leader, former President of All
India Catholic Union and currently Convenor of Indian Catholic Forum) dealt on the Pastoral dimension of the Nicene Creed from Laity’s point of view. He covered three areas on the Creed as follows:
The Trinity, Nicaea, Legalese.

Feast of St John Marie Vianney

 

The Feast of St John Marie Vianney was joyfully celebrated with a solemn Holy Mass presided over by Archbishop Thomas D’Souza at Vianney Home at 6:45 am. Archbishop was joined by the Fathers from the Archbishop’s House and the Jesuit Provincial House , Fathers from.St Thomas parish as well as the Sisters of Vianney Home and our beloved sick priests Fr Babu and Mr Martin.

The Sisters beautifully organized the liturgy, with heartfelt singing and active participation, creating a prayerful and uplifting atmosphere.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, Archbishop Thomas along with Fr Dominic visited Fr Orson in his room, offered a special blessing, and administered Holy Communion with great tenderness.

The celebration concluded with a short but meaningful felicitation program, followed by a delightful breakfast, marking the day Joyful.

Inaugural Ceremony of Theology Course for Laity at Archbishop's House

The Inaugural Ceremony of the Theology Course for the Academic Year 2025–2026 was held with reverence and joy at the Archbishop’s House.

The program began with a solemn Bible Procession, followed by the Enthronement of the Holy Bible, led by His Grace Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, invoking God’s Word as the foundation of our academic and spiritual journey.

Fr Dominic Gomes extended a warm welcome to the Archbishop, the professors from Morning Star College, and all the participants of the course.

His Grace  delivered an inspiring Inaugural Message, encouraging the participants to grow in faith, understanding, and service through theological formation.

Rev Fr Dr Henry Jose MSFS presented the Dynamics of the Course, highlighting its objectives, structure, and spiritual relevance.

Rev Fr Dr Peter Lingdamoo shared a thoughtful message on behalf of Rev  Fr Dr  George MSFS (  Rector of Morning Star College,)  emphasizing the vital role of laity Empowerment  in the life of the Church.

Two devotional songs were rendered during the ceremony, adding a reflective and prayerful dimension to the celebration, uplifting the hearts of all present.

The program concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Fr Dominic Gomes, expressing deep gratitude to everyone whose contributions made the event meaningful and memorable.

The ceremony came to a fitting close with the soulful hymn "Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart," echoing the collective spirit of gratitude and joy among all gathered.

May the year ahead be one of deep faith, fruitful learning, and spiritual growth for all.

 

 

 

'THEOLOGY FOR THE LAITY' COURSE TO START IN CALCUTTA ARCHDIOCESE COURSE-II / 2024 – 25

Hosea 4: 6 "My people will perish because of lack of knowledge."

On 25th May 2024 His Holiness Pope Francis addressing the general assembly of the pontifical mission societies insisted on a renewed commitment to the Second Vatican Council Constitutions on Sacred Liturgy, Light of the Nations, Word of God, and the Church in the Modern World. The purpose and mission of the Church is “making everyone know and live the 'new' communion that the Son of God made man has introduced into the history of the world” (Praedicate Evangelium, I, 4).

Following up on the success of 2023-24 Theology course Most Rev. Thomas D'Souza (Archbishop of Calcutta) and Father Dominic GomesVG (Director of Bible Commission) met with Rev. Fr. Dr. Henry Jose MSFS (Dean of Morning Star Regional Seminary) and the fruit of this meeting was the decision to structure the 'Theology for the Laity 2024-2025' course in line with the Holy Father Pope Francis's exhortation on the Constitutions of the II Vatican Council.

Theology for the Laity 2023-2024 course conducted by the Morning Star Regional Seminary faculty under the aegis of the Bible Commission concluded successfully on 24 April 2024. 58 lay members from our parishes completed the course with distinction and received their certificates at the hands of Archbishop Rev. Thomas D'Souza. This year-long course covered subjects such as Christology, Mariology, the Doctrine of the Trinity, sanctification through the Sacraments, Social Teachings of the Church, the fundamental principles of Catholic Liturgy, Lay Spirituality deals with the role of the Laity both in the Church and the society at large and much more.

From June this year the Bible Commission of Calcutta Archdiocese has started the process of training animators (from amongst the 2023-24 Course graduates) and forming Bible Cells in every parish with the aim of maintaining a continuity in theological teaching-learning process to ensure a spread in theological knowledge at the parish grassroots level.

To maintain the continuity of teaching-learning at the Diocesan level, the Bible Commission in association with Morning Star Regional Seminary, Barrackpore will commence the second year of “Theology for the Laity 2024-2025” course with an inauguration ceremony on Saturday 13 July 2024 at the Archbishop's House.

It is a reality that the Church in today's modern times is faced with a variety of challenges, both from within and without, that are temporal, spiritual, cultural and intellectual in nature. Besides, this our Holy Father Pope Francis has, through the Synodal process, exhorting the Church to live a Christian life in mission mode of service and hope in the world. The Church is the united body of Christ comprising the clergy, religious and lay faithful.

Today we have a large number of lay people, young and old, actively involved in the service of the Church and the communities at large through the Pastoral Commissions and various ministries of the parish action groups who also proclaiming the Word of God. Moreover, it is the laity who are truly immersed in the world of families, communities, work, and public life. In order to face these challenges, we need more and more lay Catholics who have sound theological knowledge of so as to the various aspects of the Faith be able to practice it meaningfully and fruitfully while engaging actively in the pastoral endeavors of the Church.

The lesson content for 2024 – 2025 course to be covered over a period of 32 days (classes) will provide an opportunity for the Laity to be well-informed on following subjects:

Besides an email letter to all Parish Priests from the Head of the Bible Commission, Father Dominic Gomes, the newly appointed Animators and other members of the Commission will be visiting the Parishes in the Calcutta Archdiocese to encourage the laity to register for the course. During the month of June, the Commission will also publicise this Course through posters, banners and flyers giving the subjects to be covered and other details of the course will be handed out for further information.

Archbishop Thomas D'Souza has announced that a course on 'Theology for the Laity' will be conducted by Morning Star Regional Seminary, Barrackpore in collaboration with Calcutta Archdiocese's Bible Commission headed by Father Dominic Gomes. From Morning Star, the course will be conducted and coordinated by Rector Revd. Fr. Dr. George Panthanmackel, MSFS; Dean of Theology Revd. Fr. Dr. Henry Jose, MSFS; and Dean of Philosophy Revd. Fr. Dr. Thumma Mariadas Reddy, MSFS.

Triduum Celebration at Our Lady of Happy Voyage Church, Howrah

 

Our Lady of Happy Voyage Church, Howrah did not only celebrate 77 years of Independence but two more great events that is The Feast of the Assumption of Mother Mary and The Feast of the church on 15th August, 2023. The day began with hoisting the Indian Tricolour flag, while little children waved the miniature version in pride. 

The day cannot be complete without the Word of God. The main celebrant for the bilingual mass was His Grace Thomas D’ Souza and the co-celebrants were Rev. Fr. Sunil Kujur the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Devraj Fernandes the Principal of St. Aloysius School and co pastor of the parish and Rev. Fr. Anjeet Ekka. At the end of the mass His Grace was felicitated as he is celebrating 25 glorious years of his Episcopal Ordination. 

After mass there was a cultural programme organised by the various groups of the church. The congregation gather in the school auditorium and enjoyed skits, songs and dances based on Mother Mary and the nation. During the programme around 30 plus children from Sunday school (English and Hindi section) was awarded for regularity by the Archbishop and 20 plus were felicitated as they accomplished success in various educational fields.

There was a scrumptious lunch served for all who joined in the celebration. The day ended with a football tournament organised by the parish youth. The youth of the church of OLHV had organized a intra parish futsal tournament for the youth of the parish. There were 6 teams and each team consisted of 6 players and after a day of great enthusiasm, dedication from the players the winner was Howrah Fc United , and the team who secured 2nd position was Jerusalem United and the team secured 3rd position was San Antonio Commanders. Among the players Anil Sebastian was the Best Goal keeper and Daniel Govia was the highest goal Scorer.

Kolkata WeCare & Seva Kendra combined to work with KMC

On 22nd July, 2023, Saturday, the Director of Seva Kendra Calcutta, Fr. Anthony Rodrick together with Fr. Dominic Gomes, Vicar General organized a gathering for the staff of Seva Kendra Calcutta, distinguished personalities from different fields of work and Principals of prestigious schools of Kolkata at the premises of Seva Kendra Calcutta. 

At the gathering the core committee of Kolkata WeCare got an opportunity to learn about the genesis of Seva Kendra Calcutta, it’s Vision and Mission, the thematic areas it covers, namely- Environment, Health Care, Education, Social Justice, Livelihood, Food Security and Campaigns & Events, its areas of operation within the Districts of West Bengal, namely – Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, 24 Parganas (N) and part of Bankura . 

The presentation touched several facets of work and involvement of Seva Kendra Calcutta within its area of operation. Rapport building and networking with the stakeholders of Khanaberia, Junior Balaka Sangha, Boinchtala, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, NRS Hospital D.N.DE. Homeopathy College&Hospital to name a few. 

Over the years and through many projects, Seva Kendra Calcutta worked in collaboration with Kolkata Municipal Corporation to create awareness on various subjects, life threatening diseases (such as Dengue, Malaria, HIV AIDS) would be one of them through rallies, auto campaigns, to reach out to a large mass of people within several wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Over the years through various projects, Seva Kendra Calcutta has been successful in empowering the CBOs or Community Based Organizations or the beneficiaries – the children, the youth, the women, the men and the elderly through various workshops on Group Building, Community Led Development & Group Management for the Social Act ion Group and Community Action Group members, Situation, Problem and Stakeholders Analysis, 74th Amendment & Social Legislation, just to name a few, which subsequently resulted in the incontestable and incredible initiatives taken by the community members to improve their neighborhood, the environment, the social environment etc. 

Some of the incredible initiatives worth mentioning are – dropout re-enrollment in schools, pond cleaning in Motijheel, construction and repair of toilets in Motijheel and Vaishali, transforming Barua Maidan in Motijheel from a dumping g round into a playground for the community children and the youth of Motijheel, installation of compactor machine opposite Loreto Convent to improve conditions of sanitation, plantation drives within the community and at schools. 

Seva Kendra Calcutta has conducted several activities at schools such as health camps, plantation drives, awareness generation programs etc. in a bid to create awareness of environment, health & hygiene and social environment. 

SKC is privileged to run a project on Prevention of Substance Abuse and Tuberculosis wherein, it deals with drug addicts and links the latter with rehabilitation centers for recovery. SKC is currently, producing cotton bags to replace the use of plastic in a bid to save the environment. Thus, the involvement of Seva Kendra Calcutta in various activities was discussed in a nut shell. 

Next, we had the core members of the Kolkata WeCare, graciously took the time to present their commitment and sense of mission for the society by working with Seva Kendra Calcutta and other Non-Governmental Organizations in Kolkata,The City of Joy. They were delighted to learn that their mission aligned perfectly well with the mission and the activities implemented over the years by Seva Kendra Calcutta. They stressed on plantation drives, recycling of wastes, adoption of the practice of collecting wet and dry wastes separately at schools and institutions, conduct plastic free campaigns to promote the usage of eco-friendly products, cotton and jute bags at schools and introduce environment literacy to students at schools. 

Towards the end of the discussion, one of the dignitaries professed his desire and earnest intention to revive the heritage of Kolkata and bring back its glorious past. Prior concluding the meeting, the main pointers were revisited for more clarity. Finally, the discussion ended on a very positive note.

Dumka plans for Synod- BEC Convention

A group of priests and Religious from Jharkhand region decided to hold a Convention from October 12 to 15, 2023 in Dumka . 80 priests and religious present for the orientation on Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) July 10 to 12 in Dumka social service center unanimously decided to animate people for the convention. The theme for the convention is “to enlarge the Tent in our neighbourhood for all people”, said Bishop Julius Marandi of Dumka and chairman of Jharkhand BEC Commission.

This is also an occasion to thank God for 150 years of blessings on Jharkhand, said Sr. Christin Joseph, HC from Calcutta. The Gospel message have reached all corners of the state during these years.

Sr. Christin facilitated the sessions on synod, BEC and the role of Priests and religious in the BEC. Fr. I.P. Sarto, Regional Coordinator of BEC in Bengal took a session on Ministries in Basic Ecclesial communities and in the parishes.

The Diocesan Service Team (DST) members of Dumka diocese conducted meaningful Bible veneration everyday. Bishop Julius Marandi of Dumka inaugurated the orientation and encouraged the priests and religious to be prophets in the present world. Fr. Solomon, SJ of Dumka Province spoke to the participants about the need of unity among all people of good will and to work jointly for the welfare of the marginalized tribals in Jharkhand.

The Synod-BEC Convention will gather people form nearly 20 dioceses, said Fr. Sonaton Kisku,Vicar General of Dumka. This convention will empower people to know the constitutional rights of all and to work for the dignity of all without any discrimination, said Sr. Christin, one of the main organisers of the convention.

Representatives of youth, Lay animators, pastoral sisters, priests and bishops will attend the convention. Different committees are formed to plan for the convention. Sharing of faith experience, role of laity, social analysis of the present situation, enlarging our tents for all people of good will to experience the love of Christ, Exposure to villages, Gospel sharing and a mega Bible procession are some of the events planned for the convention. We expect more laity for the convention, said Fr. Louis Maria Joseph, Parish Priest of Maharo in Dumka I have sent personal invitation to all the Bishops of Jharkhand, Bengal and Bihar and hope all would attend this convention, said Bishop Julius Marandi, the host for the convention. We plan to accommodate the participants in the families of our faithful, said Fr. Pius Marandi, Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Dumka.

Bible Commission on track to Launch Theology Course for the Laity

On Saturday 24th June 2023 members of the Bible Commission gathered for a special meeting chaired by the Commissions’ Head Fr. Dominic Gomes. The agenda was finalization of the inaugural program to launch the ‘Theology for the Laity’ course that is slated to start shortly on 8th July 2023 at the Archbishop House.

At the start, Bible Commission members who had been visiting different parishes to announce the course and motivate people to join the course reported their largely positive and encouraging response from Parish Priests and parishioners. The total number of persons enrolled for the course was 56 and rising with a few more days to go the Commission expect s the numbers to cross 65. It was also agreed that one-time payment of the nominal registration and course fees (total of Rs 1,200) should not be an impediment to enrol for the course and people may pay a sis convenient for them. 

A WhatsApp group is being setup to keep all course students informed about classes and other relevant information. All those who have enrolled should already have seen their numbers included on this ‘Theology Course Group’, if not then should please contact the person they enrolled through or Fr. Dominic directly.

Another important matter of maintaining continuity of the course and it was suggested that students taking this course who are not already members of the Bible Commission Cells in their Parishes join the Cells and if there is yet no Bible Cell in the Parish then they should start such a Cell with the help and encouragement of the Parish Priest. Also, the students will be provided with short encapsulated modules on each of the themes covered during the duration of the course and they should take this back for sharing sessions in their own parishes through the Bible Cells and or other types of special sessions organized in consultation with Parish Priests. This will ensure an opportunity for the joy of sharing and spreading the learnings related to the Word of God and Catechism of the Catholic Church with others. The inaugural program for 8th July would start with a solemn Bible procession and enthronement with opening hymns and prayer followed by felicitation of the dignitaries. A welcome message will be delivered by Archbishop, His Grace Thomas Dsouza and a message by Rector of Morning Star Seminary Rev Fr. Dr. George Panthanmackel MSFS. Fr. Dominic Gomes will speak on the genesis, continuation and purpose of the Bible courses held so far in the Archdiocese followed by Rev. Fr. Dr. Henry Jose’s talk on the dynamics and salient features of the course. Closing hymn, Bible blessings, vote of thanks will close the inaugural program. Following a fellowship tea-snack break the first class of the course will start after a self-introduction by all the students.

Based on his earlier discussions with Rev Fr. Dr. Henry Jose MSFS (Dean of Theology), Most Rev Archbishop Thomas D’Souza imparted encouraging message through his announcement at the recently held Priests’ Recollection regarding the importance and vitality of this Course. It is also recorded in Archbishop’s Circular RCAC/Cir-10/2023 to the Clergy, Consec rated Persons and Lay Faithful. My Sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the Bible Commission members for their generous help and support for mobilising all the parishes for the Theology Course of the Laity.

Sunday 11th June 2023: The Catholic Association of Bengal organised an ‘All Faith Prayer Service’ at Don Bosco School Park Circus to specially remember and pray for the situation in Manipur and the families of the victims of the recent train accident in Orissa.

There were more than hundred people attending the service of quiet reflection and intercessory prayers by various religious sections. The program began at 4 p.m. Different religious and political leaders flocked to pray as one big community.

There were prayers for different intentions: For peace in the country, for leaders of our country, for inter-religious harmony, for the well-being of the leaders and the people of West Bengal, etc.We had religious leaders from various faiths who were invited to pray. Among them were representations from the Catholic Church, Armenian Church, Orthodox Church, Methodist Church, Assembly of God Church, Church of North India, FGS Kolkata Temple, Parsi Fire Temple, Sikh Community, Sindhi Community , Shia Community, the Muslim Community and Rama Krishna Mission. There were also Religious Sisters from QMS and Missionaries of Charity. Indeed, it was a wonderful and large representation of so many leaders of different faiths coming together under one roof praying for the same cause.

One cannot deny the presence of political leaders who left their busy schedule to pray together. We at CAB were honoured and privileged to have them in our midst. Among them we had the honourable MP Smt. Mala Roy, MP Janab Nadim- Ul -Haque, Honourable Minister of Disaster Management - Janab Javed Ahmad Khan, Vice-President of the TMC Jay Prakash Ma zumdar, former MP Imran Hasan and Dr. Qasim and honourable MLA Vivek Gupta. We also had the presence of Mr Shibuprasanum - the Chairman of the Heritage Committee and an artist by profession.

The Prayer Service was held to pray and to stir a deep devotion in this difficult time to beseech the mercy of God on our Mother Earth and specially our Beloved country India in general and West Bengal in particular.

The success of this prayer service goes to the President, Mrs Angelina Mantosh Jasnani and the Treasurer Mr. Colin Fitzgerald who took this initiative and worked tirelessly and selflessly, along with their EC members. We at CAB feel so blessed and thank God for uniting us as one big family irrespective of caste and religion, praying together for peace, harmony and brotherhood

Calcutta Archdiocese Speaks from the Heart

Kolkata 27 May 2023 - The Archdiocesan Social Communication Commission (ASCC) organised a Panel Discussion, "Speaking with the Heart," on the theme of World Communications Day, which was marked the previous Sunday.

The panellists for the discussion came from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Sandra Singh, a retired teacher and Lay Missionary of Charity, has been actively involved in volunteering at the Emmaus Retreat Centre and teaching street children in Kolkata.

Father P.J. Joseph SJ, the Director of Chitrabani and former head of the Vatican Radio's English Service for South Asia, brought his expertise in media and communication to the panel. Mario Martin Louis, of St. Xavier’s University, who has also held senior positions in leading hospitals in Kolkata, and is also active in philanthropy.

Andrilla Mary Peterson, an MA in English and B.Ed. student , had previous leadership roles within the Church and is currently involved in the Parish Council and Synodal Team. Sister Monica Suchiang IBVM, a Loreto nun, currently the Director of Kolkata Mary Ward SocialCentre (KMWSC) and a strong advocate for women's rights.

The moderator for the panel discussion was the Reverend V. Gnana Peppin, a diocesan priest known for speaking from the heart. Father Peppin worked with youth for much of the 2 decades of priesthood and directs the family apostolate in the Archdiocese of Calcutta.

During the panel discussion, the participants spoke openly and shared their personal experiences , emphasising the role of love in communication. They expressed that love is essential in fostering empathy, understanding, and connection. When communication is grounded in love , individuals listen attentively, speak with kindness, and seek to understand others' emotions and perspectives. Love creates a safe and nurturing environment where communication flourishes, leading to deeper relationships and mutual respect.

The panel discussion was live-streamed for those who could not attend in person, and is also available for viewing on the Archdiocese YouTube channel. Mr. Farrell Shah, Archdiocesan Director for Social Communications, expressed gratitude to all the panellists for their active participation; and the Vicar General , V. Reverend Dominic Gomes, offered concluding remarks and blessed the event.

World Social Communications Day is an annual event observed by the Catholic Church to highlight the importance of effective and meaningful communication in fostering understanding, respect, and unity among individuals. By tradition Pope Francis delivers a powerful message setting the theme of the year on the Feast of Saint Francis de Sales – this time on 24 January 2023. "Speaking with the Heart," is this year’s theme and emphasises the need for authentic communication rooted in compassion, empathy, and love.

CAREER GUIDANCE SEMINAR FOR CHRISTIAN YOUTH

Christian students numbering over 500, from over 18 schools of the city attended the Career Guidance cum Motivational Seminar organised by the Catholic Teachers Guild of the Archdiocese of Kolkata. The Seminar was held at Don Bosco School, Park Circus, Kolkata on Saturday, 29th April, 2023 from 9 am to 1 pm. The program began by an introduction by the President of the Guild, Mr Joseph Chacko where he welcomed the dignitaries and participants and outlined the purpose of the Seminar, to empower the young Christian students to take up well placed careers in future and be exemplary Christians wherever they are. The Vicar General of the Archdiocese, Fr Dominic Gomes began the seminar with a very meaningful prayer. The President then called upon the Chief Guest and Motivational speaker, Mrs Hilda Peacock, renowned Academic consultant, Mr Solomon Nesakumar IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (STF) along with Fr Bikash Mondal, sdb. Principal of Don Bosco School, Park Circus , Fr Dominic Gomes and the Spiritual Director of the Guild, Fr Moloy D’Costa to light the inaugural lamp which was followed by the release of the book on ‘Career Guidance ‘ – a handy guide to all educators to motivate their students to choose the correct career options according to their potential.

Mr Solomon Nesakumar IPS delivered his address to the students. He rued the fact that in this State of West Bengal there are hardly any Christians in the police force or in the Government sectors inspite of us having the best Christian educational institutions in the city. Mr Solomon Nesakumar spoke straight from the heart about his humble origins and how he aspired with a dream and determination to become an IPS officer. He challenged the students that if he could do it, inspite of failures, then they could also but only if they have a passion for it. To see a Christian officer in uniform, share his life experience was truly inspirational to the young Christian students.

Mrs Hilda Peacock, Our Chief guest and motivational speaker, began by referring to the Biblical verse from Ezekiel 22:30 – “And I looked for a man to stand in the gap, but I found no one”. She referred to young Timothy who refused to stand in the gap inspite of being given the responsibility ,which led to the loss of the battle. She challenged the young to stand in the gap and make a difference. Her powerful speech left everyone spell bound.

The Christian resource persons were then felicitated and lead to the different classrooms to interact with the students on their preferred choice of careers.

We had Dr Sipra Goswami for those who wanted to take up the medical profession, Mr Raja Xavier for Law, Mrs Althea Philips for Journalism, Mrs Charlotte Simpson for Teaching, Mr Ransdale Manuel for Games and sports, Mr Xavier Gomes for those interested in the Hospitality industry, Mrs Jessica Gomes for Fashion designing, Mrs Janet Gasper for Management, Mr Promode Fernandes and Mr Stephen Dolby for the IT Sector, Mrs Tanishka Safri for Psychology, Mr Dominic Gomes and Mr Mario Louis for the General stream ,who also assisted for Media and Banking.

After an hour of fruitful interaction with our Christian resource persons in the respective classrooms the students assembled in the hall. Mr Shane Calvert and his team from the West Bengal Minorities Development and Finance Corporation shared about the different loans, Scholarships and other schemes for the minorities. They expressed regret that these schemes and loans are not availed by the Christian community. Students could log into – www.WBMDFCscholarships.org for further information. The Guild could also help the students to initiate this process.

Fr Mani sdb, from Don Bosco, Liluah then spoke on the various technical courses offered by the Don Bosco Technical centres at Park Circus, Mirpara, Krishnanagar and Liluah. He also spoke to the girls about a lucrative career now in nursing and the various colleges where they can pursue their dream in the health sector.

The Career Guidance seminar ended with a short but important session of serving God and his people through “ A Call to Religious life” conducted by Fr Bijay Ghosh, sdb ,who urged young people to become Priests and nuns to serve Gods Kingdom.

Fr Moloy D’Costa, rounded off an extremely fruitful Career Guidance Seminar speaking about the “Way ahead’. Mr Derek Fernandes, Vice President of the guild delivered the Vote of thanks. The Guild is extremely grateful to the Salesians at Don Bosco Park Circus for the hospitality rendered to host the Seminar. The Resource persons all shared the fact that our young Christian youth, who are our future, need a lot of guidance and motivation and such seminars for them would do them a world of good and augur well for the future of our Christian community.

THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS HELPS US FACE LIFE

 

 Easter or the Resurrection of Jesus is the greatest miracle which the four Gospels narrate in simple and down-to-earth language. The empty tomb and the apparitions of the Risen Lord confirm the fact that Jesus truly rose from the dead. "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him" (Mk 16:6-7). "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen as he said. Come, see the place where he lay" (Mt. 28:5-6). "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen" (Lk. 24:5-6). This was the firm faith of the early Church. St. Paul preached this faith: "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He appeared also to me. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead." (1 Cor. 15:3-4,8,17,20). 

As we celebrate this event of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, we proclaim the Paschal Mystery of Faith: 'Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again'. This proclamation has many implications for us as Christians: Jesus died for our sins, he has redeemed us from the bondage of sin. In his resurrection, he has given us a new HOPE that we too will rise from the dead: Already now in this world, and in the next one too. We are called to live in hope despite many situations of despair and hopelessness. If Jesus has conquered death, He will surely conquer all obstacles and hurdles for us, of course in his time. We are called to do our best and leave the rest to him. Let us face life's challenges with courage.

Our world is going through a difficult situation caused by war, hatred, violence, religious and human persecution, injustice, and all this is a perfect recipe for despair. It is at this time that we hear Risen Jesus' voice: "Do not be afraid" (Mt. 28:10); "Peace be with you" (Jn. 20:5). As Christians, we are called to be ambassadors or messengers of the Risen Jesus, heralding hope, joy and peace. May we succeed in instilling hope in those who need it the most. n our personal and family lives,let us be optimistic in the face of adversities by being faithful to prayer, holiness of life, fidelity to the word of God and Sacraments, and works of charity. May our families and communities grow in the spirit of the Risen Lord - hope, peace and joy. Mary our mother is an example of Easter Hope. Let us imitate her.

International Women’s Day Celebration at Calcutta Archdiocese

 “Mangal Deep Jele” with this melodious song along with the graceful entrance dance, holding the diyas ,the Holy Eucharist of the International women’s day began at Church of Christ the King ,Hall, Park Circus on 5th of March at 9.30 am. The main celebrant of the day was Rt. Rev. Archbishop Thomas D Souza and concelebrants were Vicar General Rev. Fr. Dominic Gomes and the parish priest Rev. Fr. Basil Mandi in the presence of nearly five hundred enthusiastic women of the Archdiocese of Calcutta and two guests from Croatia. The trilingual service was well organized by the members of Council of Catholic Women of India along with Women’s Commission of Calcutta Archdiocese.

 Archbishop Rev. Thomas D'Souza beautifully narrated the day’s Gospel on the feast of Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ in His sermon. He mentioned in his preaching that Holy Father Pope Francis says in His meditation that all the people should have Divine experience in life, then only one can realize who is Jesus Christ to us. This Divine experience gives us the eagerness to go to church to experience Him as a family. The service of the Holy Eucharist ended with the worthy manner.

After a short Tea break the second part of the program started with the Introduction of the Women’s Day, keeping in mind the Theme, “ Digit All: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality" which was read out beautifully by Mr. Dilip Rozario. It was followed by the Welcome Address and felicitation by the president of CCWI to the dignitaries of the day.

Archbishop Rev. Thomas DSouza was requested to say a few words to the women of the Archdiocese during the program where he wished all the women present and spoke on the Theme of the year.

“God has created man and woman in equal dignity and rights, no one is superior. Therefore all the girl children should be educated well and help them to empower themselves. The gender equality generally starts through the education in the family and it is necessary to create awareness in the church and community. Society needs to be transformed. Young women should be given respect and responsibility which is also possible together through synodality as we are going through Synodal phase. Seeing the huge crowd of the women for the program His Grace said whole community of women bring meaning and courage and empowerment to other women of our community.

Today the world has become Digital. So we need to give the girl children and young women an opportunity in digital education to walk along with the present situation. Women cannot be behind the digital world.

Vicar General also shared a few words to encourage the women of the Archdiocese and wished them all.

Thereafter, two active members of women’s commission shared about the women empowerment as well as social and welfare schemes of West Bengal Minorities and finance corporation to the women crowd to create an awareness as many of them are not aware of these schemes. Dr. Linda Lewis who is the parishioner of Church of Christ the King shared some important tips on the health issues to the young mothers as well as the senior citizens to keep themselves fit and healthy.

After the input session the cultural program started with the opening song by the women of Premnagar, followed by a skit and few numbers of colourful folk dances by the women of different parishes which was enjoyed by all.

The day’s program came to an end with a sumptuous fellowship meal.
