Archdiocese Christmas Carol Event Makes Comeback.

KOLKATA, 4 December 2021 – The Archdiocese of Calcutta held Songs of Good Cheer 2021 – Carols by Candlelight, in joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus, the Saviour, at Sacred Heart Church, Dharmatala, with 14 choirs from Kolkata and Howrah cities performing.

The novel concept – inside a historic church, by candlelight (battery ones, in this age of eco-friendliness) – was headlined by well-known gospel singer Savita Kapper, who opened the evening’s programme with a stirring rendition of “Once upon a Christmas” followed by “O Christmas Tree,” at which the large Christmas tree in the Church was lit. The Church choirs then continued the programme.

Despite rainy weather due to the imminent approach of Cyclone Jawad, the Church was a full house, as much as COVID19 considerations permitted. Last year’s edition had been cancelled amid pandemic concerns, but while a separate online event for schoolchildren is being organised for schoolchildren, it was decided that main event would be in-person. “Getting together, enjoying and participating live, we believe will put hope and Christmas joy back into hearts as we bring to close a very difficult year for the world,”said Farrell Shah, director of the archdiocese’s Social Communications Commission, who organised the evening.Participating choirs were Kolkata Christian Choir, St Mary’s Church, Auxilium Parish (2 choirs), Christ the King Church, Our Lady of Vailankanni Church (2 choirs), John Bosco Church, The Assembly of God Church, Prabhu Jisur Girja, St John’s Church, St Thomas’ Church, Queen of Peace Church; and the unique “Blessed” – the 5-member Priests Band, which featured Vicar General Fr. Dominic Gomes on keyboard. The archdiocesan event has largest collection of choirs so far, and this year’s event saw stellar performances, much appreciated by the audience and participants.Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of Calcutta could not make it for the event as he was travelling, however he sent a Message which was read out. Bishop Paritosh Canning of CNI Calcutta Diocese, also outstation, sent a brief message and wishes. Certificates and eco-friendly gifts were given to all participants.
